Do I really need a Tap Water Filter?
The house we recently bought included a
tap water filter which I had not noticed
on our initial visit as it was
discreetly installed. The previous owner
was moving overseas and told me it was
too cumbersome to carry and that he was
traveling light.
I thanked him and just out of curiosity
asked him why he had it fitted, as I
always thought our water did not need
any extra cleansing and filtering.
Well, I was not prepared for the lengthy
tutorial that he gave me all about the
reasons that led him to fitting this tap
water purifier. He proceeded to blow
holes in my argument about why we should
install such a system and by the end of
it I must say that he made a convert out
of me.
But, being the kind of person that never
takes things at face value, I then
proceeded to do some of my own research
into the water quality around my area
and discovered some rather unsavory and
thought provoking material. I even found
out that my own local municipal water
treatment plant conducted an annual
water quality report that I could
access.
These reports are meant to give us the
consumer, details about any past
problems involving water contaminants of
any sort, namely chemical, bacterial or
biological. One section of my local
report mentioned the overuse of the
chemical chlorine.
This is used by much of the water
industry as an economical and effective
treatment agent, against water borne
bacteria that could cause some unwelcome
medical conditions if we drank untreated
water.
I was happy to note that my tap water
filter stops this chemical entering my
drinking water as some studies have
linked the tiny residual amounts that
still find their way into normal,
unfiltered tap water, to some serious
diseases.
Additionally, my water filtration system
stops a whole host of other man made
contaminants which I'm pleased about. Do
yourself a favor and do the same.

I had always thought that the water from my tap was safe to
drink until I uncovered some worrying information about what
else it might contain. One welcome advantage of this new age
of information is our ability to find answers to problems
fast.
